Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the difference between a spiritual director, therapist, and chaplain?

A: These roles can sometimes overlap, but they serve different purposes:

  • Spiritual Director – A companion who helps you notice and respond to the movement of the sacred in your life. The focus is on deepening your spiritual journey, not problem-solving or clinical care.

  • Therapist/Counselor – A licensed professional who supports mental, emotional, and behavioral health. The focus is on healing, growth, and coping strategies for life’s challenges.

  • Chaplain – A trained caregiver who offers spiritual and emotional support in specific settings such as hospitals, the military, schools, or workplaces. The focus is on presence, comfort, and guidance in times of need or transition.

Q: Do I need to choose between a spiritual director, therapist, and chaplain?

A: Not necessarily. These roles serve different purposes and can complement each other. For example, you might see a therapist for emotional healing while also meeting with a spiritual director to deepen your faith journey.

Q: Can I meet with more than one at the same time?

A: Yes. Many people find value in working with more than one type of support. It often depends on what you’re looking for—whether it’s spiritual growth, mental health support, or care during a life transition.

Q: How often do people usually meet with a spiritual director?

A: Most people meet once a month for about an hour. This rhythm allows time to reflect and notice how the sacred is moving in daily life, while still providing regular support and guidance.
